The third mega-conference of the International Orthodox Theological Association (IOTA) will take place in Poti and Kobuleti, Republic of Georgia on 17-21 January 2027. The overall theme of the conference is “Tradition and Traditions.” This theme will be featured in the sessions of some, but not all of IOTA’s thirty groups. Proposals will be accepted from now until April 26th, 2026. All proposals must be submitted on IOTA’s website here: https://iota-web.org/2027-call-for-papers/
Of note, Fr Daniel (Dean of St Cyril’s) is the co-chair of the Biblical Studies Group at IOTA along with Prof. Edith Humphrey. The Biblical Studies Group invites papers on the theme of “Tradition and Traditions within Scripture”: “proposals from scholars of both the Old and New Testaments for papers that concern the themes of Holy Tradition and/or tradition(s) in relation to the Scriptures. We envisage presentations that do a close reading of a passage or related passages where tradition is a dominant theme, thematic papers on how the notion of tradition functions across the biblical canon or a smaller corpus, methodological reflections on Orthodox understandings of the inter-relationship between Scripture and tradition, and investigations tracing specific historical, theological, or literary traditions in the Bible. While IOTA 2027 gives prominence to the theme of tradition, the steering committee will also consider proposals on other topics within the area of Biblical Studies.”
